New Active Life Through Recovery Sessions at our Southend Centre

We’ve teamed up with the Macmillan Information and Support Centre to launch a new fitness and well-being class at our Southend Cancer Support Centre. The ‘Active Life Through Recovery’ sessions are run by not-for-profit fitness organisation, Active Life, and were previously hosted at Southend Hospital’s Macmillan Information and Support Centre. Held every Thursday from 11.15 am, the sessions are open to anyone that is recovering from cancer treatment and provide a whole-body approach to improve range of movement, physical strength and increase energy levels.

As Tina Adlam, fitness instructor for Active Life says: “It’s great to be able to offer these well-being classes to people that are recovering from cancer. It’s not just about increasing your fitness levels, the sessions also help to boost confidence and mental well-being too. The course is designed to improve people’s muscle strength, co-ordination and balance in order to reach a level where they are able to return to mainstream exercise classes.”

Located in the St Luke’s Centre behind St Luke’s Church in Southend, Essex, the HRCC Cancer Support Centre offers clean and comfortable facilities, with free parking and plenty of public transport options.

Pat Hume, Centre Development Manager for HRCC, welcomes the new classes to the centre: “We were keen to offer this kind of fitness session to our Southend Centre as it’s a great opportunity for our clients to boost their fitness levels, meet new people and most importantly, have fun. Some people can feel intimidated by group fitness classes, but Active Life Through Recovery is low-impact and is suitable for all ages.”

Friederike Englund, Macmillan Information and Support Manager initiated the sessions and says: “Being physically active has an important role to play in cancer care as it enhances well-being, reduces cancer and treatment-related symptoms and can even reduce the risk of the cancer coming back. This exercise programme is the ideal place for cancer patients, who wish to become more physically active.”
