Sports Events and Outdoor Pursuits

There are many ways members of the local community can support the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity via sporting and outdoor adventure initiatives:

If you are interested in participating in any of the events listed below, please contact our charity office on 01245 514325.

Tandem Skydive Various Dates

Do you fancy taking part in a sponsored 10,000 feet freefall parachute jump on our behalf? We would ask you to raise £395 in sponsorship money in order for you to jump for free and in turn we will receive an average donation of £140. In addition to this, every extra pound that you raise over the minimum comes straight to the charity, so please try to raise as much as you possibly can!
Technically the jump is called a ‘Tandem Skydive’. It is a Skydive because you will be freefalling through the air (without the parachute deployed) for several thousand feet; it is in Tandem because you will be harnessed to a professional parachute instructor at all times throughout the descent (see front photo). This is the only way you can jump from such an altitude without spending thousands of pounds becoming a freefall parachutist. This is literally the chance of a lifetime!
This jump is also much less demanding than the traditional ‘static line’ jump as the jump and training are completed in one day and your instructor will be in control of your landing.

Points to remember:
Jump and training completed in one day.
Harnessed to an experienced parachute instructor at all times.
Jump from at least 10,000 feet - just like the professionals.
Freefall down to 5,000 feet - falling through the air at 120 mph!
Ride the parachute down to the ground - we teach you how to steer
.. onto the drop zone.
Landing controlled by your instructor.
Certificate to prove that you have completed a ‘two-mile high’

With long days in the saddle and some strenuous hill-climbs, the sight of the Eiffel Tower, the finishing point will evoke a real sense of achievement. Jurassic Coast (Dorset, UK)

Weekend Duration: 3 days/2 nights
Grade: Moderate
Dates: 23–25 Apr 2010, 16–18 Jul 2010, 8–10 Oct 2010

This trek along the Jurassic Coast, England’s first Natural World Heritage site, will be an enjoyable and memorable one. Stretching 95 miles between Old Harry Rocks in Dorset to Orcombe Point at Exmouth in East Devon, the Jurassic Coast is the most geologically diverse coastline in the world. The exposed cliff sections allow you to look back through 185 million years of time, including the whole of the Mesozoic Era. Starting at Durlston Head, just outside Swanage the trek is a total of 23 miles (36 km) over two days using the South West Coastal Path. There is a stop off at a campsite in the renowned village of Kimmeridge, a short distance from the famous Kimmeridge Bay where you will see amazing rock pools (tide permitting).

Land's End to John O'Groats Cycle

Weekend Duration: 13 days/12 nights
Grade: Tough
Dates: 28 Sept–10 Oct 2010, 3–15 May 2011, 30 Aug–11 Sep 2011

Cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats, the furthest possible distance in the British Isles, is a classic challenge that many dream of. Starting at Land’s End on the south-westerly tip of England, we pedal our way through Cornwall, over Dartmoor and north along the Welsh border, skirting the Lake District into Scotland, via lochs and the Highlands to the North Coast and John O’Groats.

Accommodation is varied and ranges from small B&Bs to larger hotels. Due to the route we take, some nights are in Travel Lodge-style accommodation to minimise unnecessary extra mileage. In Scotland we may stay in hostel-style accommodation for one or two nights. Be prepared for variety!

Hadrian's Wall Weekend (Northumbria, UK)

Duration: 3 days/2 nights
Grade: Moderate
Dates: 4–6 Jun 2010, 6–8 Aug 2010, 10–12 Sep 2010

This is a long challenging weekend which will give you a great sense of achievement. The hiking challenge starts at Lanercost Priory and the first 7km is along a small road passing through several villages and then up and along a ridge running alongside the wall. You arrive at the impressive Birdoswald Roman Fort, set on a high point above the small village of Gilsland and from here you join a path running alongside Hadrian’s Wall, which eventually takes you into Northumberland National Park. From the lunch-stop at the Roman Army Museum you walk along the most visible sections of the wall, which runs along spectacular cliff tops and through stunning countryside. The next day you set out towards the wall again and climb back up to the ridge where you meet the wall and continue walking east. The path takes you along crags and past several lakes to Housestead Roman Fort. You continue for a couple of hours towards our finish at Broccolitia. The total distance travelled is approximately 41km/25 miles.
