Case Studies

Kathryn Hungerford

Since the recurrence of my breast cancer in 2004, and undergoing radical surgery followed by chemotherapy, I have been very fortunate in having the opportunity to take advantage of just about everything the Helen Rollason Heal Cancer Charity has to offer. I have been on the Live Well Programme, visited Rochelle House and volunteer in the office.

The difference this has made is immeasurable and difficult to put into words sincerely. The charity has enabled me to meet lots of new people, in particular many strong and inspiring women.

This diagnosis has enabled me to take stock of my life and prioritise.

The charity has helped me to gain strength and comfort, and to face things with renewed confidence. It has also taught me how to enjoy the simplest of life’s pleasures.

On a more practical note, the charity has proved to be a valuable resource where there is always a friendly voice at the end of the phone, giving hope and encouragement. Information is so important when diagnosed with cancer – ignorance is definitely not bliss in this instance. The more information you gain makes you realize you are not alone.

My life is certainly richer for volunteering for the charity and being able to help others. It has brought a positive camaraderie, laughter and tears, which family and your closest friends find difficult to understand.

I have been able to regain some semblance of normality in my life. I have now gained the confidence to continue doing my job. Continuing with routine and normality in an abnormal situation is vital when faced with the uncertainty of diagnosis. Being able to be useful was an absolute lifeline.

The Helen Rollason Heal Cancer Charity has changed my life by enabling me to live my life, albeit differently.
