Calling all cyclists

There is still time to enter Ride for Helen this Sunday, 8 May. You can save £5 before midday Friday, 6 May. See details in this story!

Hundreds of cyclists from across Essex and beyond are set to make the third year of Ride For Helen – Sunday 8 May – the biggest and best yet!

With just a few days to go before the big event, people of all ages are getting ready to use their pedal power to help support people living with cancer.

They will have the choice of cycling one of four circular routes through the beautiful Essex countryside, all starting and finishing at The Crix, Hatfield Peverel, CM3 2EU.

One of the routes this year, the six miler, is a new one and ideal for families looking to enjoy a Sunday with a difference; with each paying adult, there is one FREE junior place available.

The other routes cover 15, 35 and 65 miles so there is a route for all – from the novice to the seasoned pro.

Back at base, two special guests attending the event are world-class snooker player Ali Carter, and BBC Essex Presenter Sadie Nine. Cyclists and their supporters will also be able to enjoy refreshments, bike maintenance point, photo opportunities, sports massage and children’s inflatables.

There is still time to register for Ride for Helen – download and print out the registration form at Complete, scan the form and email to and then call to make payment on 01245 380719 by midday Friday, 6 May, and you will still only pay £15 for an adult entry. Alternatively, you can print out this registration form, complete and bring with you on the event day, at a cost of £20 per adult, with one junior place for every adult, and extra juniors are £8.

HRCC Fundraising Manager Kate Alden said: “Last year’s Ride For Helen raised more than £38,000 with 830 cyclists taking part on the day. This year we’re hoping the wider choice of routes will attract the keenest of cyclists but also more families to join in too.”

“It was a great atmosphere last year and it promises to be even better this time around,” said Kate. “We’re looking forward to seeing as many people as possible taking part in an event which is great fun and for a very worthy cause.”

Darren Thompson, Head of Business at Essex Audi Group is once again delighted to be a part of such a positive event: “As a group we thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the bike ride last year, and we hope this year is even more successful than the last, with staff from all centres taking part we hope to raise as much money as we can for this amazing cause.”

Could you spare a couple of hours to volunteer on the day as a route marshal, or help out at the Hatfield Peverel event base? Call 01245 380719, or email

Wivenhoe resident Brenda Harvey volunteered to marshal at a rest stop along the Ride for Helen Route in 2015, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience:

“I had a grand day out! I was based at the Alma Arms in Copford with a fellow volunteer, and was tasked with handing out water and energy bars to the passing cyclists, and generally cheering them on. The majority of the riders stopped to chat to us, and to each other, before we waved them all off again with words of encouragement.

“When I first volunteered I was given several different options of how I could be of help during the day, and gave the level of commitment I felt comfortable with. I received comprehensive guidance from the organisers ahead of the Ride and was very much looking forward to the event. On the day it was beautifully sunny, and there was such a buzz of goodwill and energy around the event that I had a really fantastic time. I have already offered to marshal again this year!

“If you are considering volunteering to help Ride for Helen 2016, then I would shout out to you what I was calling out to the riders on the day: “Go for it, you’re doing a fantastic job!.”
